Flag design! I prefer the term vexillology, but semantics. I just like designing flags, I think it's an underrated art form that deserves more recognition.

Hometown redesign

This is a design I made a while back for my hometown. The current flag is literally just a seal-on-blue, which just hurt me.

There's a lot of symbolism packed in, but the basics is that it nods towards our shipbuilding history, cranberry bogging, and the historical separation from a neighboring town which bore us in the first place.

School design

This is a design I made a while back as a concept for my local school district. I have zero plans to pitch it, it was just a fun design exercise!

The district is made up of three local towns situated around a lake, so the flag is divided into three equal fields pointing toward a central hub. This hub represents the lake itself, framed in the school's colors of red, white, and silver. Because the lake was historically famous for trout fishing, and the trout even served as the school's mascot once upon a time. I anchored the bottom white field with a stylized trout to honor that local history.

I've recently finished up my first year of college. I know there's a post about some of my experiences, but so much has already evolved since then that I'm gonna write about it all again hopefully soon. Right now I'm on summer break, so there's not too much going on. When things start picking up I'll update this!

That being said, I've recently been getting into a new hobby: flag design. I don't know why, it's just fun. I'm not the greatest designer, and I only have basic Inkscape knowledge, but it's been really fun so far. I'm currently in the pre-stages on trying to get my town to update their flag as it's currently an oh-so beautiful seal-on-blue design. I'm hoping for it to go through at our November town meeting, but nothing's garunteed.

Yes, I know, it's not even close to spooky season (unless you're Walmart), but it's still an awesome classic! And, while it is a good read, it is also incredibly slow and long, so a Halloween deadline isnt entirely unrealistic.

I've been playing: NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona

I've been getting into emulation recently, in particular Gamecube and Wii emulation with Dolphin. One of those games is the 2002 classic NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona. For a Gamecube game, the career mode is fantastic and, in my opinion, overshadows any modern title (looking at you NASCAR Heat 5). Highly recommend it!

  • Text editing and programming: In the terminal, I use vim (Luke Smith has an awesome tutorial series on his website if you'd like to learn). For GUI and most of my programming, I use VSCodium, an open source and Microsoft-free fork of the original Visual Studio Code.
  • Web browser: For 90% of my daily browsing, Librewolf is my default. The rest I use plain Firefox for when certain sites won't load on Librewolf. I also have Brave installed for the rare cases when a site needs to a Chromium browser, but I very rarely use it.
  • Search engine: A locally running SearX instance. Otherwise, DuckDuckGo.
  • Browser extensions:
  • VPN: MullvadVPN.
Utility
  • File manager: Thunar.
  • Mail and calendar client: Thunderbird.
  • Video and music player: When working in the terminal, I use MPV. In the GUI and for watching DVDs, I use VLC Media Player.
